The Cloud of Hair and Petal of Cheek — Hsu, Tsui-Ling’s Fine Brush Paintings of Beautiful Women

Hsu, Tsui-Ling is a female artist who began learning painting because of her keen interest in paper cutting. In earlier period, she learned from Master Zhang, Ke-Qi how to make fine brushwork and flower-and-bird paintings in a freehand style. Later, she learned to paint beautiful ladies from Master Wu, Wen-Bin. Meantime, she also made her 2-year study of in-service training program in the Department of Painting & Calligraphy Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts. At that time, she started liking moving historical and legendary figures and pensive and undisturbed moods with far-away distance and ancient times. From paintings in this exhibition, we can see that the painter has tried to introduce Western pictorial elements and Chinese freehand style for depicting landscapes and flowers and birds and bring them to paintings with images of beautiful ladies. She doesn’t confine herself in traditional style or painting techniques alone, but still keeps several elements of Chinese painting — strength (jin), vigour (huo), roundedness (yuan), moisture (run), and elegance (ya). In doing so, what she creates in paintings having remarkable images with natural, graceful, delicate, affecting and pretty women.
