As a handy and efficient tool, pastels are the artist Chang-lu Shen's favourite painting materials. He transfers his experience of teaching children how to paint into expressing himself by representing landscapes. His paintings have special quality and offer viewers with different perceptions.
Shen's paintings convey hermit-like relaxation and tranquillity – the quality perhaps coming from cultivation originating from his hometown Kinmen and from his Chinese painting and calligraphy training. With influence by Chinese painting and calligraphy for long time, his work involves natural revealing of seemingly water-ink paintings. Although using pastels is difficult in technique approach, the artist Shen can delicately narrate sceneries. It's not easy to do so, but he makes it.
