Les Aveugles, one of Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlincks (1862-1949) representative works of the Symbolist movement, was performed for the first time in 1891. It depicts 12 lonely blind people being brought by a senior priest to a strange forest of the north. In this isolated asylum which keeps away from lively and secular real life, everything becomes extremely lonely and depressed. These blind people anxiously wait for the priests coming, but dont know he has already passed away and remains by their side. Maeterlinck in this play purposely creates a scenario different from the real world and conveys a modern issue related to human soul and destiny by revealing the blind peoples painful and screaming state in their helpless situation.
